The ongoing electrification of automotive powertrain makes engine upgrading more challenging, while it also provides an opportunity to design and develop high-efficiency engine. Based on a bespoke single-cylinder gasoline engine for extended range electric vehicle, the influences of homogeneous ultra-lean combustion,in-cylinder water injection cooling and EGR on in-cylinder combustion process were analyzed, and the contribution of each technology in achieving 45% effective fuel thermal efficiency was studied, which presented a new path to future high-efficiency engine design and optimization.
