The crucial factors of high-energy ignition applied on homogeneous leanburn gasoline engine were investigated on an optical single-cylinder engine. A conventional ignition system and two other highenergy ignition systems with variable energy and continuous discharge were compared by means of combustion analysis and high speed photography. The experimental results indicate that boosting the spark discharge power level is the most effective way to enhance ignition energy and improve combustion stability. Meanwhile, the utilization rate of high-energy ignition system is higher at low speed and low load due to longer combustion duration, which results in a faster and more stable combustion process and an extra extended leanburn limit. Besides, since the spark plug type and orientation also influence the formation of spark channel and the development of early flame, a pintopin spark plug with larger electrode spacing and spark plug with electrode gap back to the intake side are suggested, which can improve the combustion velocity and stability.
