The friction force changes of different mating materials, cooling intensities and lubricant mediums with the temperature of piston ring groove were studied through simulating the combustion process inside combustion chamber with the flame heating piston on a selfmade temperature limit apparatus of piston ring groove based on the friction force. It was found that the temperature limit of piston ring groove increased gradually with the increase of cooling intensity and the temperature limit at
the friction pair of chrome plated cylinder liner with CKS ring was higher than that at the pair of the same cylinder liner with chrome plated ring or spraying molybdenum ring. Besides, the temperature limit of piston ring groove of SAE15W/40 was also higher than that of SAE40 and SAE10W/30.
