Effect of Cylinder Deactivation on Fuel Consumption and Vibration of Four-Cylinder Gasoline Engine

Abstract

Based on a 1.5 L four-cylinder gasoline engine, the cam profiles of the second and third cylinders on the intake and exhaust camshafts were modified into base circles to achieve the closure of intake and exhaust valves, and software control was used to cut fuel injection in the second and third cylinders. The changes in fuel consumption and vibration characteristics relative to the original four-cylinder gasoline engine were experimentally studied on the engine bench after two cylinders were deactivated. The research results show that the mechanical power loss of four-cylinder gasoline engine with two deactivated cylinders reduces by 1.1%-10.4% and the fuel consumption at the test condition points improves by 0.3%-6.4% at the speed of 1 000-4 000 r/min. However, the amplitude of crankshaft torsional vibration increases by five times, and the linear vibrations in three directions of the engines three mounting points significantly deteriorate.
