Abstract

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) will frequently drop to idle and regenerate during the actual application, and this abnormal regeneration is the main reason of DPF hightemperature melting or cracking, resulting in the reduction of DPF reliability. To address this issue, a burner bench was built to perform a repeatable dropping-to-idle (DTI) test on cordierite DPF. The consistency of DPF regeneration under the same soot load and regeneration conditions was investigated, and the durability and robustness of DPF were evaluated by the temperature distribution inside the carrier of DPF, PN emission characteristics and CT scan results. The results showed that the temperature distribution inside the DPF was uneven during the 30 times DTI tests, and the maximum temperature occured near the outlet end of carrier. The temperature of DPF gradually decreases from the center to the edge, and the larger temperature gradient appeared at the edge of carrier. The PN emission did not increase significantly after 30 times DTI, and there was still a large margin from the China Ⅵ limit, and no obvious cracks were found in CT scan.
