Abstract

Carbonaceous nanoparticles graphene oxide (GO), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and graphene (GR) were taken as fuel additives and added to biodiesel and diesel blends at 25×10-6 and 100×10-6 respectively. Then the combustion characteristics, economic performance and soot emissions were studied on a ZS1100 diesel engine. The results show that the blends with 20% volume of biodiesel improves the combustion process, shortens the flame retardation period, advances the CA50, and reduces soot emissions at each load, but leads to the increase of specific fuel consumption by 4.2% and the reduction of thermal efficiency by 2.1%. All the three carbonaceous nanofuel additives optimize the combustion, shorten the flame retardation period, and improve fuel economy. According to the comparison, the maximum cylinder pressure peak increases by 0.334 MPa, the peak heat release rate increases by 17.9%, the specific fuel consumption reduces by 5.0% at most, and the thermal efficiency increases by 4.4% after adding 100×10-6 MWCNT. In addition, the three carbonaceous nanofuel additives all reduce soot emissions. The reduction is more obvious at high concentrations of MWCNT and GR and reaches the optimal of 17.2% at 100×10-6 MWCNT.
