Abstract

The ethanol fuel has strong water absorption and the residual water will keep in biodiesel fuel during the preparation. The residual water in the mixed fuel of ethanol and biodiesel will have a certain effect on the combustion process and the emission of diesel engine. The model of combustion and emission process of 186F diesel engine was established and verified by the measured indicator diagram and the simulation was then conducted for ethanol and biodiesel blended fuel under different water contents. The influencing law of water content on combustion characteristic parameters of diesel engine and NOx and soot emissions was analyzed with the model. The threshold of absorbed water in the mixed fuel of ethanol and biodiesel was proposed based on diesel engine power, economy and emission performance. The results show that the maximum pressure, mean temperature and indicated pressure inside cylinder decrease with the increase of water content within the range of 0%-20%. The indicated specific energy consumption of diesel engine fueled with mixed fuel also increases. The reduction of NOx and soot mass fraction increases. The threshold of absorbed water in the mixed fuel of ethanol and biodiesel should be less than 10%, or the performance of diesel engine will be affected.
