Abstract

In order to understand the influences of different altitudes on comprehensive performance of turbocharged intercooled diesel enginetaking the electronically controlled turbocharged intercooled diesel engine as the experimental object, the power, fuel economy and emission characteristics were investigated experimentally at different altitudes by using an atmospheric simulator. The experimental results show that the influences of altitude on power, fuel economy and emission characteristics at low speed are greater than those at high speed. The speed range  in which turbocharged diesel engine has high power output and good fuel economy becomes smaller with the increase of altitude and shifts to the high speed range. The rated power at the altitude of 1 900 mreduces by 6.3% compared to that at the altitude of 100 m. In addition, the maximum torques and the specific fuel consumptions at 1 000 r/min and 2 200 r/min decrease by 23.6% and 3.8% and increase by 9.2% and 2.1% respectively and the CO and soot emission also increase by 3.55 times and 3.06 times respectively at 1 000 r/min. Altitude has great influence on NOx, soot, HC and CO emissions with the increase of load at low speed.
