Abstract

To investigate the effects of blending oxygenated fuels on fuel injection characteristics, PODE and butanol were mixed with diesel in 50% volume fraction to obtain PODE-diesel and n-butanol-diesel blends, marked as P50 and B50 respectively. A high-pressure common rail test bench was used, and an injection characteristic test system based on the momentum flux method was employed to study the differences of injection characteristics of diesel, PODE-diesel and n-butanol-diesel under various operating conditions. The results show that blending oxygenated fuels have a significant influence on injection rate. The volumetric flow rate of P50 is lower than that of diesel, while the mass flow rate shows the opposite trend. The difference in injection rate between B50 and diesel is little at low pressure and becomes significant when the pressure rises to 130 MPa. Compared with diesel, B50 is larger than diesel and the difference increases with the increase of pressure, while P50 is smaller than diesel and the difference decreases with the increase of pressure according to cyclic injection volume under the same injection pulse width and pressure. According to cyclic injection mass, both P50 and B50 are higher than diesel and the difference rate increases with the increase of pressure, but the increase rate of difference between B50 and diesel is smaller than that of P50. According to cyclic injection energy, P50 and B50 are lower than diesel except at short injection pulse width and the order from high to low is diesel, B50 and P50.
