Effects of Soot and Ash Loading in DPF on Performance of Diesel Engine with Different Turbocharging Systems

Abstract

Based on an in-line six cylinder turbocharged diesel engine test bench, a one-dimensional thermodynamic simulation model of diesel engine equipped with DPF was constructed. The effects of soot and ash loading in DPF on performance of diesel engine with different turbocharging systems were studied. The results show that soot and ash loading in the DPF leads to an increase of exhaust back pressure and a decrease of intake charge for both singlestage turbocharging (1TC) and two-stage turbocharging (2TC) diesel engines, resulting in the decrease of power output and NOx emissions, and the increase of brake specific fuel consumption and soot emissions. Soot is beneficial to filter particles and improve the filtration efficiency of DPF due to its deep-bed soot layer and low permeability. Due to the presence of ash plug, the ash reduces the effective filtration length of the channel, thus reducing the DPF filtration efficiency.Soot and ash loading of the inner DPF caused the power and economy indexes of 1TC diesel engine to decrease by 22.8% and 29.6% respectively at 1 000 r/min, and by 2.1% and 2.2% respectively at 2 200 r/min. The power and economy indexes of 2TC diesel engine decreased by 6.7% and 7.1% respectively at 1 000 r/min, and by 10.7% and 11.9% respectively at 2 200 r/min. Therefore, twostage turbocharging can reduce the influence of soot and ash loading of the inner DPF on the performance of diesel engine.
