Abstract

In order to further study the operating characteristics of diesel engine using exhaust recirculation(EGR) technology in plateau environment, the effects of EGR on performance and emission of a lightduty vehicle diesel engine at different altitudes (0 m, 1 000 m, 1 960 m) were experimentally investigated by using an altitude simulation device. The results showed that the tolerance of EGR rate in plateau area was weaker than that in plain area. With the increase of EGR rate, the engine power performance decreased and the economy deteriorated. Compared with the economy, EGR had a more significant impact on power performance in plateau area. EGR could effectively reduce NOx emissions at different altitudes. With the increase of EGR rate, both the brake specific CO emission and smoke increased at different altitudes and were more sensitive to EGR.
