Abstract

In order to analyze the micro morphology and aliphatic hydrocarbon functional groups of particulate matters from a high-pressure common rail diesel engine fueled with different iodine value biodiesels, the average particle size, box counting dimension, functional group content and the relationship of average particle size and functional group with iodine value were analyzed by using high power transmission electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The results show that the average particle size of soybean oil biodiesel (SME), palm oil biodiesel (PME) and waste oil biodiesel (WME) combustion particulate matters is 18.4%, 20.3% and 27.9% smaller than that of diesel combustion particulate matters respectively. Compared with diesel combustion particulate matter, biodiesel combustion particulate matter has a larger box-counting dimension, a tighter structure, and a higher degree of agglomeration. The content of aliphatic C-H functional groups on the surface of SME, PME and WME combustion particulate matter is 6.8%, 11.4% and 18.2% higher than that of diesel particulate matter respectively. The degree of branched chain on the surface of biodiesel particulate matters is higher than that of diesel oil, and diesel particulate matter contains benzene ring with stable molecular structure. Iodine value has a significant effect on the micro morphology and functional groups of particulate matters. With the increase of iodine value, the particle size of biodiesel increases and the content of aliphatic hydrocarbon functional groups decreases.
