Abstract

The cooling module consisted of intercooler and radiator in a sidemounted heavy duty diesel engine compartment was researched and 3D internal flow and heat transfer numerical simulation model was established. Coupled simulations of the cooling air flow and heat transfer were carried out to estimate the heat dissipation performance of the intercooler and radiator under two different layout forms of frontandrear layout and upanddown layout. The results indicate that the upanddown layout of cooling module brings about less change of the coolant outlet temperature of radiator than the frontandrear layout. The hot air outlet temperature of intercooler decreases by 24% with the upanddown layout. In addition, the upanddown arrangements of intercooler and radiator can not only reduce the heat load of engine but also cut down the taking space of radiator and intercooler, which is beneficial to the optimization of the engine cabin space layout.
