The combination of thermo-gravimetry and mass spectrum (TG-MS) analysis and diesel engine bench test were used to study the combustion catalysis of nano-copper particles on soot particles of diesel engine. The research showed that nanocopper oxide had an excellent catalytic ability for soot particle combustion because it could lower the full oxidation combustion temperature of carbon from 580 ℃ to 520 ℃. The diesel engine bench test demonstrated that the nano-copper lubricant additive reduced particulate matter (PM), CO and HC emissions by 99.0%, 81.3% and 33.3% respectively. The above research results indicated that the nanocopper particles could promote the complete combustion of carbon compounds and reduce particulate matter (PM), CO and HC emissions effectively. Accordingly, the carbon deposits in the combustion chamber was suppressed and gradually eliminated in the end.
