The thermal management of cooling system was modified and tested on a Bclass car with 1.5T GDI gasoline engine and 6AT transmission and the reduction of at least 2% fuel consumption was acquired during NEDC cycle. The results showed that the main reason of fuel consumption improvement was rapid warmup of engine. The rapid increase of wall temperature for engine body is more important than that of coolant. The effect of saving fuel by heating engine oil with coolant was lower than expect because the temperature increase of engine oil mainly depended on the heat transfer of engine body wall. The effect of heating transmission oil by coolant was obvious, the fuel consumption improvement was hence good in the WLTC cycle and realtime driving cycle, but poor in the NEDC cycle due to the limited time.
